Much of the most valuable St. Michaels, Maryland real estate comes with a pedigree. Colonial, Federal and Victorian architecture predominates throughout the town and chances are that the piece of gracious St. Michaels, Maryland real estate you’ll come to admire has been in existence for at least a hundred years or more.
St. Michaels in Talbot County is known as the “Town that Fooled the British.” During the War of 1812, the town, which was then a thriving shipbuilding center, learned of an imminent waterfront attack from the British and promptly cooked up a clever plan of their own. The townspeople hung lanterns on ships’ masts and the tops of trees, causing the British ships to overshoot and saving the town from damage.
The incident has gone down in history and to this day residents of St. Michaels, Maryland Homes are still more than familiar with the tale. The past is alive and well in this tiny waterfront town with a total area just a shade less than a square mile. With a history that goes back for 300 or so years, however, it isn’t surprising.
With the Miles River, Broad Creek and the Chesapeake so close at hand, you’ll also find that most St. Michaels, Maryland real estate come with waterfront views as well. Some have direct access to the water via their own private docks.
A St. Michaels landmark that celebrates the town’s and the region’s history is the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, which features the 1879 Hooper Strait lighthouse, one of the country’s three remaining “screwpile” lighthouses.
